Safe Voyage
After 17 smooth hours at sea our crew, Mike and Al, arrived in Guanaja. The weather was ideal and the boat ran well so it was a pretty easy trip. There was a lot of open water, but there was plenty to see. Starting with 8 jumping dolphins riding the bow of the boat at sunset. Then the “super” moonrise soon after, with the largest moon of the year. There were also 3 planets visible: Venus, Mars and Saturn. Then the moon set and the sun rose, both equally amazing over the open sea.
Arriving in Guanaja was a magical sight. Green mountains were visible for 25 miles and the isolation of the island was apparent. There was a big sigh of relief when the boat passed through the NE channel and the Caribbean blue water welcomed the boat into shallow waters. The boat is now home for the summer in the boat house. Ready for action, and the ideal boat for all our activities.
Biggest Moon of the year, followed by the start of the Bio Tours
You can’t miss the moon this time of the month, that’s because it is as close to Earth as it will be all year. Making the big full moon look even bigger. The largest and fullest moon will be on Sat. May 5th, but will also be large on the 6th as well.
Right after the glowing display of the moon ends, the glowing display in the water begins. Starting May 7th and going for the next 3 weeks we will be doing Bio Tours by boat and kayak every night that we have reservations. Judging from the last moon cycle, this dark moon cycle should bring excellent viewing conditions for the Bioluminescence creatures. So give us a call or email us to book your special Bio Tour!
Sweet Spot crew prepares for Cayman-Guanaja crossing
Packing up the 22 foot Panga named “Downwinder” for the open sea voyage to the island of Guanaja, Honduras. The Sweet Spot crew is loading fuel, food, kite gear and SUP gear and heading for our summer windy spot in Honduras. 300NM and nothing but the deep blue separates Cayman and Guanaja. It should be an adventure and hopefully we show up in Guanaja in 15-20 hours
Epic Kiteboarding does photo shoot in Grand Cayman
We were host to one of the most legendary kiteboarders for a week in March. Epic kiteboarding and Dimitri Maramenides came to Cayman Islands to take advantage of the clear water and perfect conditions for their lastest product photo shoot. They were rewarded with Epic conditions which allowed them to shoot many of different spots around the island. We did Stingray City, East End and Finger Cay. The crew was a lot of fun and we had fun together…. and they got some great shots too. Click here to see some of them.
Wind from all directions!!
The spring winds have arrived meaning different wind directions and different riding spots. This week we have seen winds from all around the compass. SE and S winds means riding the south facing sounds and reefs. From the large and beautiful Frank Sound to the smaller but as nice Peace Bay all the way down to South Sound, where the majority of kiters congregate.
Then the shift to the W and eventually NW saw some of the best conditions on 7 mile Beach. Normally the leeward side of the island, 7 mile Beach doesn’t see too much wind, but that changed on Sunday with great conditions and lots of kites on the water….. and beach!
As the wind becomes more NW and N we get the opportunity to ride one of the best spots on the island, Starfish Point to Rum Point. The large uncrowded sandbars and reef breaks give this area a huge amount of terrain that is not normally ride-able until the wind is NW or N.
Forecast is for the wind to come in full circle by returning to the normal NE to E wind direction and back to riding the Sweet Spot on the East End. What a great week to explore different parts of the island. And thanks for the late season strong wind. As now we will start to transition to our Summer kiting conditions of lighter, less consistent E and SE wind.
